November 2009 – January 2010

CANVASS Art Studio presents a magical story of Art:

Toby and His Missing Paintbrush
A knowledge-based Art Programme
(Parents, this will beat backseat boredom!)

Introduction:

“It is a myth that the left and right brain cannot be engaged simultaneously!”
Who says we can't engage both the left and right brain simultaneously?
This holiday, pick up your paintbrush, put on your thinking hat and
join us in this MOST unique, outrageous and magical journey of
story-telling, wacky experiments and art-making!

Get trekking with us and discover how knowledge, history and patterns
in nature can help you improve your perception and art.

Toby and His Missing Paintbrush:

Combining the inventive fun of story-telling and nifty science, we
encourage children to draw from the inspiration of their inquisitive
imagination and express creatively.

Following the adventures of Toby, participants are taught to interpret
(sometimes symbolically) their observations and use these as
start-points for their own creative expression. In the process, they
learn to satisfy their curiosity about why, what, how, who, and where.

Programme content:

Each day, participants follow Toby on his quest to find his missing
paintbrush; and open their imagination to mythical creatures (wizards,
fairies, unicorns and many more!).

Once a week, they learn about the wonders of their everyday world
through fun demonstrations of science experiments. For example, we
bring to life the process of sublimation through dry ice, and teach
them how to re-create the smoky effect of dry ice in their own paint
works.

Fine Art techniques:

Each child will learn to observe and draw freely with the following activities:

Sketch mythical creatures with the help of simple step by step demonstrations
Mix layers of paint and colour to create magical and dreamy moods
Use different brush strokes and blending techniques to form textures
Build special and 3D effects with clay, paper-mache, wire and other
artist quality materials

Cultivate Artistic Talent (CAT™ Method):
‘ INSPIRE, EDUCATE, CREATE '

Our art learning structure is based on our proprietary CAT® Method
(Cultivate Artistic Talent). The CAT™ Method believes that in order to
stimulate and maximize a child's creativity, we need to have a 5
pronged approach, which are Intellectual Ability, Experimentation,
Personalized Attention, Motivate Passion & Focus and Environment.

The CAT™ Method helps a child to develop independent thinking and
focus. It taps into each child's latent creativity, makes him aware of
his/her artistic sensibility in his/her environment and thereby
increases his/her potential to generate innovative ideas.

Program Creators:

Owner and programme director Michelle Ow has more than 12 years of
prolific experience in the local arts scene and educating children.
Working alongside Michelle in designing Canvass' out of the box,
knowledge-based art programmes are Brandon (undergraduate at UCLA) and
Samuel (undergraduate at Cambridge University), who devote long hours
to researching and devising novel ways of engaging young ones.

Facilitators:

All our facilitators are fine art graduates or interns with a huge
passion for art (and children, of course!). They are all carefully
selected by Michelle and have been trained by her in Canvass'
proprietary CAT Method of teaching.

More importantly, we believe that each child should enjoy the process
of art-making, refining their thinking skills and fine art techniques!

A knowledge-based ART program?

We aim to do more than just teach art with brushes and easels! At
Canvass, we believe that deepening one's knowledge of the world will
help make art a much more enriching experience.

The artist observes the world -- the play of light and shadow on a
fold of cloth, for example, or the curved surface of a sphere. We push
this further by introducing a “did you know” moment, to cultivate an
inquisitive mind.

The child is then encouraged to study the subject or point of
interest, and to experiment with different methods to try to reproduce
the same effect. In doing so, the child becomes more involved with
their art-making.

Lastly there's interpretation -- the artist's work is not a mere
facsimile of nature, but incorporates a style unique to the artist.
The child will learn to view symbols beyond direct, visual
interpretations; a leaf beyond its appearance or a dragon beyond its
form. This process ignites the child's imagination and formulates
his/her creative expression.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1) What kind of science experiments can children expect?
Once a week, our facilitators will demonstrate a thoroughly safe but
interesting science experiment! Some examples include growing crystals
using a special solution or simulating the colours depicted in the
change from day to night in a beaker! Children will find the
experiments inspiring, captivating and refreshing!

2) Can children of all ages understand the facts presented?
Whilst the program is designed for children aged 4 – 12 years old,
each child can be expected to use his/her own interpretation of the
activities and information presented. Our facilitators will be on hand
to observe and map your child's development to his/her art-making
potential.

3) What sets Canvass' programmes apart from others?
Our curriculum is designed by Michelle Ow, an arts & MBA graduate with
more than 12 years' prolific experience in the local arts scene and
children's education. Our lessons are uniquely tailored and based on
feedback – as well as aimed at maintaining relevance to current
affairs and themes, such as digital media, healthy living, the green
movement, and love for animals.

Canvass practices the proprietary CAT® Method (Cultivate Artistic
Talent) and actively encourages children to think in new ways, take
sensible risks, be motivated and focused and have the ability to
showcase ideas!

We offer the ideal balance of group work and individual attention to
each child by observing and mapping the child's development to his/her
art making potential. More importantly, we believe that each child
should enjoy the process of art-making, refining their thinking skills
and fine art techniques!

4) How much is the Holiday workshop?

Each workshop with 5 daily sessions cost $190. If you sign up for 2
workshops or more, you are eligible to a 5% discount. So each workshop
after 5% discount is $180.50.

5) If I am not interested in a weekly workshop can I register my child
for one session?

Yes, you may. Each session is $45 and the duration is 2.5 hours.
